Congressmen Yoder and Rep. Cleaver Join VA Secretary Shinseki on KC VA Medical Center Tour

Kansas City, MO – Congressman Kevin Yoder and House colleague Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II (D-MO) welcomed retired Army General and Veterans Affairs Secretary Erik Shinseki for a tour of the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Kansas City, MO today. The group discussed the importance of the Kansas City VA Cochlear Implant Clinic and the impact it has on veterans who utilize the clinical services offered there. The Secretary also discussed current VA initiatives to end homelessness among veterans by 2015. Additionally, Congressman Yoder thanked the Secretary for his recent testimony regarding the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2013. The appropriations bill passed the House by a vote of 407-12.

“I was pleased that Secretary Shinseki could visit the VAMC here in Kansas City with us today. Sec. Shinseki has a long and distinguished record of military service for our country, and he knows first-hand the importance of the VA and the services it provides our brave military men and women once they return home from serving all around the world. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I was pleased to see the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs FY 2013 Appropriations bill pass the House with overwhelming bipartisan and nearly unanimous support, providing funding for veterans’ benefits and programs to make sure all veterans receive the services they have earned and deserve,” stated Congressman Yoder. “I thank Sec. Shinseki for taking the time out of his busy schedule to see for himself the quality services provided to our veterans here in Kansas City, and for discussing with us how to continue to improve how we care for veterans returning home.”

The Kansas City VA Medical Center opened in 1952, and supports several local Community-Based Outpatient Clinics; including facilities in Mission and Paola in Kansas, and Belton, Cameron, Excelsior Springs, Nevada, and Warrensburg in Missouri. The mission of the KC VAMC is to provide high quality, comprehensive primary and tertiary healthcare to Veterans in its service area, and to provide selected specialty care services to referred Veterans. It is also their mission to provide education and training to healthcare professionals and to perform research that benefits Veterans.
